7 Ideas for the Glass Computer
Glass has been able to be used as a computing processor since 2005.
The folks at Olympus and NSG created this new area of technology.
Just think of a CPU that is see-through! Miniature irregularities are made on super smooth glass surfaces, these act as data lines that carry information.
This computer does not have to be in a box, it is the car windscreen, the wine bottle and the contact lenses, no CPU ‘box’ to be seen.
Some possible future public applications:
- Contact lens data processors / projectors
- Wine bottles that monitor and report on atmospheric conditions
- City buildings windows that monitor seismic events
- Security related recording and data processing devices, perhaps sun-glasses
- Car windows that overlay maps and video
- Intelligent jewelery, perhaps medical to monitor a patient’s vitals (outside)
- Medical miniature probes that record and transmit all sorts of data (inside)
Mac OS X, Windows and Ubuntu
Hey guys,
Thanks for reading!
What does the Mac OS X, Windows and Ununtu Linux have in common?
I have installed all three on my MacBook Pro - at the same time.
The window on the left is the Ubuntu 7 - Feisty Fawn. It is considered to be one of the best Linux OS available for all round users.
On the right is the workhorse Windows XP. I believe that this all an office needs to run with (2007).
In the background is trusty Mac OS X. What an OS to be able to do all of this at the same time. Some really great software is responsable for making all of these fine OS run together, Parallels Desktop.
If you were looking for some of the best technology available today I would urge you to think about mac as your next machine, and if you cant afford one then how about your old PC with Ubuntu Linux installed on it? Takes around 8 minutes to install.
Ok, here is the real reason for todays thoughts. I believe that Windows may have reached some sort of fork in their road with their release of Vista. They have not provided their public what was needed or wanted for that matter. Vista may have some great features but it may not be enough to take them across the river Stix this time.
Ubuntu Linux is the product of so many man hours. The operating system as well as all of the software it runs is created by people who just do it for free. Seriously large companies are involved with these types of open source projects. IBM for example has been contributing towards Linux for many years.
Even though there are other Linux distributions out there, some seriously impressive, Ubuntu is close to home as it’s dad is South African, Mark Shuttleworth. Well done Mark! We are really proud of you. Ubuntu is developed by his company Canonical Ltd.
With developments over at Adobe at the moment we could see some great next generation software being able to platform independent. Adobe Apolo
platform promises to bring us a tool that installs like Flash or Java and runs one set of code. That means it will not matter what OS you use, you will get the same experience from one package. The OS may disappear all together soon as well. After all, you don’t need anything more then a browser and a connection to work these days thanks to Google Docs and Spreadsheets.
Have a good one and thanks for reading!
Mark

I would like to nominate PHP for being such an awesome operating system/language/tool/:)
Even though it is only one part of a graceful set of software, it still rocks rocks rocks!
There is a very beautiful flavor on the Internet at the moment, and just like good coffee, it does the job just right.

What does Star Trek have to do with AI?
Famous playwright, Oscar Wilde, once made one of the most accurate, future proof comments, ever!
“Life imitates art far more than art imitates Life”, Oscar Wilde
What is meant here is that if we dream it it will become real. Just look at Star Trek for examples of this. The idea of a mobile phone is roughly fashioned in the image of a triquarter and communicator - this stuff is from the 1960’s! WOW. Talking to a computer - we are really striving to get this right. The ideas of man are solidified by his actions!
So what does Star Trek have to do with AI?
Since we have had the idea of getting silicon sand to do math (such a strange concept in itself), we have had a dream of making it think for itself. As far back as the ‘60 writers were filling our heads with ideas of life inside machines. Everyone loves Star Trek!
Huge fonts sliding onto the web
Web 2.0 has brought with it a design trend that has been emerging for a while now. It is the LARGE sans-serif font (with tight kerning).
Designers have moved away from the tiny fonts that we all loved because they were just so cute and computerized. The trend is moving away from hiding content on web pages to presenting viewers with the easiest possible user interface.

Just what are we building here?
Lets begin our search into what it is that we are building by looking first at what it is that has changed our lives up till this time as a humanity.
Tools.
Here is a short story that gives you an idea of what it is.
How to predict and win on Ebay formula
Ebay is one of the long standing hero’s of the Internet. It is right up there with Amazon when it comes to constant performance as an Internet tool. A little known fact of the bidding process on Ebay or any auction sites out there is that there are rules that govern the life cycle of an in demand auction. Lets take the auction for an iPod as an example.
Some things to note are:
The Tipping Point - Book Review
I have recently finished The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell.
This is a great read for anyone who is interested in how ideas, products and movements get started. Gladwell covers the topic of what makes a trend come alive and start to live through us successfully. There is a general acceptance that things change all the time. The Tipping Point is all about what makes that change happen, who was responsible and how did they get that idea to ’stick’.
Hi there
Thanks for reading. My name is Mark Carroll and this is my blog. My thoughts float between Internet and technology, it's effects on us and us on it.
